Former president Uhuru Kenyatta was appointed the facilitator of the peace process by EAC heads of states on July 22, 2022, just days before Kenya's transition elections.
He has been leading the peace negotiations to broker a deal to end wars pitting rival armies in the Eastern part of Congo.
Congo has constantly accused Rwanda of supporting the rebel group, the March 23 Movement (M23).
Rwanda, on the other hand, has threatened a cross-border operation against Congo, citing the existence of the Democratic Forces for Liberation of Rwanda, an armed rebel group believed to be posing a security threat to DRC.
In December, Uhuru held consultative meetings with the armed groups, civil society and victims of sexual violence in Nairobi.
The retired president, after the meetings, disclosed immediate steps to quell the fights. They included formation comprising representatives of the affected communities, the EAC, and the DRC government to facilitate the release of prisoners with no criminal record.
