An expectant mother took her life after killing her four-year-old daughter in Migori town on Tuesday.

Neighbours said Candeva Muvinya, 26, had protracted marital problems with her husband over his plans to marry a second wife.

Muvinya is however said to have solved the matter with relatives and friends and the suicide was a shock.

“This was the second attempt. She had tried to do so in a water tank and failed,” a neighbour Mary Akinyi said.

Neighbours said the husband, a teacher at a local secondary school, came back in the evening and went to buy supper and other items for home use.

“When he came back the door was locked from inside and several attempts at calling failed. We broke the door,” Akinyi said.

Nyumba Kumi elder Samwel Okombo of Ombo estate said the incident happened on Tuesday evening at around 7.30pm.

“We found the woman and her daughter dangling from a sisal rope in the bedroom. She might have killed the daughter and also taken her life,” he said.

Muvinya's body and that of her child were taken to Migori Referral Hospital awaiting post mortem.

Suna East subcounty police commander Esau Echorokodi said they had launched investigations into the matter. "We are working to establish the cause of death."
