Former President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday joined African leaders, diplomats and peace envoys in Libreville, Gabon, for the opening of the 17th High-Level Retreat on the Promotion of Peace, Security and Stability in Africa.
The two-day retreat, convened by the African Union Commission, is focusing on strengthening African-led efforts in conflict prevention, mediation, ceasefires, reconciliation and long-term peacebuilding across the continent.
The forum is being held under the theme, “Powering Ceasefires, National Dialogue and Reconciliation for Durable Peace.”
During the opening session, Uhuru addressed delegates and emphasized the need for stronger African-led mediation frameworks and coordinated approaches to conflict resolution.
The meeting has brought together former Heads of State, AU representatives, regional blocs, United Nations envoys and policymakers to exchange experiences on handling conflicts and political instability affecting different parts of Africa.
"The forum, convened by the African Union Commission (AUC), brings together AU representatives, regional bodies, United Nations envoys, and former African leaders to exchange experiences and develop coordinated approaches towards a long lasting peace and stability in Africa," he stated.

Among leaders attending the retreat are former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi, former Burundi President Domitien Ndayizeye, former Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde and former São Tomé and Príncipe Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada.
Also present was African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.
The retreat comes amid continued concerns over insecurity, political instability and humanitarian crises in parts of Africa, with leaders expected to discuss practical mechanisms for supporting peace processes and strengthening dialogue initiatives.
Discussions are also expected to focus on improving coordination between African institutions, regional organisations and international partners in responding to emerging conflicts.
Uhuru has in recent years remained active in regional peace initiatives and mediation efforts across Africa, particularly through engagements backed by the African Union and regional bodies.
The retreat aims to build consensus on sustainable African solutions to conflicts while reinforcing commitments under the AU’s “Silencing the Guns” agenda and Agenda 2063 development framework.
