Ezekiel Kyama Nzoki, the Gen Z protester popularly known for the phrase "Mr Speaker Sir" appeared before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Caroline Mugo on Monday, where he denied the charges linked to the anti-Finance Bill demonstrations of June 25, 2024.

According to the court, Nzoki is facing charges of allegedly maliciously damaging property at the Parliament Buildings jointly with others, not before the court.

"EZEKIEL KYAMA NZYOKI on June, 25, 2024, at Parliament buildings, within Nairobi City County, jointly with others not before the court wilfully and unlawfully damaged Building works, Perimeter Fence and Mausoleum flag post, Furniture, ICT & TV Screens, kitchenware, and others as per attached inventory, cars and electrical works valued at Sh41,248,570, the property of Parliamentary Service Commission," the charge sheet reads.

Kyama was released on a personal bond of Sh100,000 pending the hearing and determination of the case.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino appeared in court and represented Nzoki during the proceedings.

Nzoki became one of the most recognisable faces of the Gen Z-led anti-government protests after videos emerged showing him inside the National Assembly chambers during the breach of Parliament by demonstrators protesting the Finance Bill 2024.

The footage, which quickly went viral on social media, showed him addressing the Speaker's seat while chanting anti-government slogans as protesters occupied parts of the parliamentary precincts.

The June 2024 demonstrations, largely organised by Gen Z activists, culminated in protesters breaching Parliament as lawmakers debated the Finance Bill, triggering a political crisis and prompting the government to later withdraw the legislation.

Following the protests, Kyama disappeared from public view as authorities launched investigations into individuals suspected of participating in the breach of Parliament and related incidents.

Earlier this month, he resurfaced publicly and said he had spent nearly two years in hiding due to fears of arrest following the crackdown on protesters.

At the time, Kyama said he wanted to rebuild his life and no longer wished to remain in hiding, adding that he had sought legal support from Babu Owino in anticipation of possible court proceedings.
