KRA has been conducting tax returns caravans and roadshows across the country to assist citizens with filing their taxes ahead of the June 30 deadline.

The Kenya Revenue Authority has ruled out any extension of the deadline for filing annual income tax returns, maintaining that all taxpayers must submit their returns by Tuesday, June 30, 2026.

The tax authority has urged taxpayers who are yet to meet their legal obligation to take advantage of the extended working hours and support services it has put in place to beat the deadline.

It warned that failure to file returns on time could result in default assessments, penalties and interest.

"KRA wishes to remind taxpayers that there will be no extension of the filing deadline. All returns must be submitted on or before 30th June 2026, in accordance with the law. Taxpayers who fail to file by the deadline will be liable to the applicable penalties and may also be subject to default assessments," the commissioner in charge of Micro and Small Taxpayers said.

Aware that the final days before the deadline are often characterised by heavy traffic on its platforms, KRA said it has rolled out a range of support services to make the filing process easy and more convenient.

Taxpayers can file their returns through the iTax platform at itax.kra.go.ke, access assistance via WhatsApp on 0711 099 999, or use the eCitizen USSD service by dialling 2225#.

The authority has also extended operating hours at its Contact Centre, Huduma Centres, KRA Service Centres, social media support platforms and Ushuru Mashinani Service Partners across the country to ensure taxpayers receive timely assistance.

Taxpayers seeking help can contact the KRA Contact Centre on 020 4 999 999 or 0711 099 999, email [email protected], reach out through the @KRACare or @KRACorporate social media handles, or visit the nearest KRA office or Ushuru Mashinani Service Partner.

Even with the additional support, KRA has discouraged taxpayers from waiting until the last minute, warning that increased traffic on digital platforms could lead to delays in filing.

"Filing early allows sufficient time to resolve any issues and ensures compliance before the deadline," the authority said.

The firm stance marks a departure from last year's approach when KRA extended the filing deadline for the 2024 income tax returns to July 1 after heavy traffic and system slowdowns affected the iTax portal.

The authority also waived penalties and interest on late-filed returns for the year ending December 31, 2024, provided they were submitted by July 5, 2025.

This year, however, KRA has taken a different position, stating categorically that all income tax return obligations must be fulfilled by midnight on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.

"The authority appreciates the millions of taxpayers who have already met their obligation by filing their returns and encourages those who are yet to do so to avoid waiting until the last minute," KRA said.

The authority reminded taxpayers that filing tax returns is a legal obligation and an important contribution to national development.

"Every return filed supports transparency, strengthens the tax system and helps the government finance essential public services that benefit all Kenyans."

KRA reiterated its commitment to supporting taxpayers throughout the filing period to ensure compliance with the country's tax laws.
