National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula on Saturday led Parliament and political leaders in paying last respects to the late MP Denar Joseph Hamisi Tui during his burial ceremony at Mazeras High School in Kwale County.
Hamisi, a former legislator, was laid to rest amid emotional tributes from leaders, family members, colleagues and the church, who described him as dependable, principled and deeply committed to public service.
Speaking at the ceremony, Speaker Wetang’ula urged leaders to live purposeful lives and to support one another, noting the unpredictability of life and death.
“Today you are alive, tomorrow you aren't. God has hidden the day of death from us. You can sit on your seat, on the pulpit and you die the next minute,” he said.
The Speaker described the late MP as a dependable leader and a personal friend, calling on leaders to stand together during difficult moments.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi recalled Hamisi as a man of integrity and justice, saying their paths crossed many years ago.
“All that has been said about Denar is the truth. I knew him many years ago, when he was a Commissioner at the Electoral Commission of Kenya during the delay in announcing my win as Magarini MP,” Kingi said.
He noted that Hamisi served as a member of the National Assembly Lands Committee, driven by a desire to resolve land issues affecting his constituents.
Deputy Majority Leader and Kilifi North MP Owen Baya remembered the late MP as a man of faith, generosity and quiet kindness.
“He was someone who believed there's nothing that can be impossible. He helped people and never wanted others to know that he helped you,” Baya said.
Several MPs present described Hamisi as humble, soft-spoken and trusted, noting that he was often sought out for financial advice.
His widow, Mrs Eileen Mukhebi Dena, described her husband as a calming presence in their family.
“Tui was one in a gazillion. When he walked into a room, he didn't just enter; he arrived. As a family, whenever a problem arises, we all breathe easier the moment he appears, because we know everything will be sorted,” she said.
Their son, TJ, urged leaders to continue with his father’s good deeds.
The defunct ANC party, represented by Kelvin Lunani, described Hamisi as reliable and principled, and a pillar within the Kenya Kwanza government.
The church remembered him as a devoted member of Mazeras Baptist Church who supported its development projects.
“The Church has lost a very good member. He was supportive of the Church activities and served God faithfully. He was building a new Church for us and had reached the roofing stage,” said Baptist Church Kenya chairperson Samuel Boba Mngong’o.
Family members described him as an anchor and source of strength.
“To the world, he was a friend and a good man. But to our family, he was everything. He was the anchor,” his brother Gly Madu said.
Several MPs, senators, Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya and former legislators attended the burial.
