The newly commissioned Sh11 million oxygen plant at Mbagathi Level 5 Hospital/HANDOUT

Mbagathi Level 5 Hospital has commissioned a new oxygen plant worth Sh11 million, a major milestone expected to significantly improve emergency care and patient outcomes at the county referral facility.

The plant will enable the hospital to produce its own clean and reliable medical oxygen daily. The oxygen is now piped directly into all wards, ensuring a quick and uninterrupted supply for patients in need.

Confirming the development, Hospital CEO Dr. Alexander Irungu said the installation marks a turning point for critical and emergency care.

“This means patients will no longer have to wait or worry when they urgently need oxygen,” he said.

“Doctors and nurses will now respond faster during emergencies, and more lives will be saved because oxygen will always be available.”

The project will also ease the hospital’s financial burden. Mbagathi has been spending an estimated Sh4 million every quarter to purchase oxygen from external suppliers. Dr. Irungu noted that the savings will now be redirected to other essential health services.

“For many families, this plant brings comfort and hope. It will help children, mothers, and all patients who depend on oxygen to breathe and recover,” he added.

The installation was celebrated jointly by the Amref Health Africa team, led by Dr. Githinji Gitahi, and the Mbagathi Hospital leadership. Amref funded the project at a cost of Sh11 million.

The commissioning ceremony also highlighted the strong partnership between Amref and Mbagathi Level 5 Hospital, underscoring ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare services across Nairobi County.
