Kenya Railways has announced an additional Madaraka Express Passenger train to accommodate the expected surge in travellers this festive season.
The extra train will run from Monday, December 8, 2025, to Sunday, January 5, 2026, ensuring passengers can travel comfortably between Nairobi and Mombasa.
The railway operator said the move comes in response to increased demand during the holiday period, when thousands of Kenyans and tourists journey along the scenic Nairobi-Mombasa route.
“We are committed to providing a safe and convenient travel experience, and the additional services will help ease congestion while maintaining punctuality,” reads the notice dated December 2.
For passengers travelling from Nairobi to Mombasa, the extra service will depart Nairobi at 09:40hrs, arriving in Voi at 13:35hrs, then departing Voi at 13:40hrs to reach Mombasa by 15:35hrs.
On the return journey, trains will depart Mombasa at 16:30hrs, arriving in Voi at 18:15hrs, before leaving Voi at 18:20hrs to arrive in Nairobi at 22:55hrs.
Kenya Railways has encouraged travellers to secure their seats early, either by visiting www.metickets.co.ke, dialling *639#, or visiting any Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station nationwide.
“We advise passengers to book early to avoid last-minute disappointments, especially during this peak travel period,” it added.
This festive season expansion is part of Kenya Railways’ ongoing efforts to enhance passenger services on the Madaraka Express, which has become the preferred mode of transport for many due to its safety, comfort, and scenic journey through southern Kenya.
The railway line connects key towns and cities, including Nairobi, Voi, and Mombasa, and is vital for both domestic travel and tourism.
The additional trains come after Kenya Railways recorded high passenger numbers during previous holiday periods, highlighting the growing preference for train travel over road transport.
Kenya Railways has also reminded passengers to adhere to the standard travel guidelines, including arriving at least 30 minutes before departure and carrying valid identification.
The operator said all necessary safety protocols will be observed, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey for all passengers.
Last September, President William Ruto officially opened the Mombasa rail service connecting Mombasa’s Central Business District (CBD) to the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) terminus in Miritini.
With strategic stops at Miritini, Changamwe West, Changamwe East, Shimanzi, Mazeras, and Mombasa CBD, the service is expected to transport up to 4,000 passengers daily.
It is designed not only to decongest the city’s roads but also to provide a safer, more affordable, and time-saving alternative for commuters and tourists alike.
