Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has been removed as the Senate Majority Whip following a resolution by the Kenya Kwanza Majority Party coalition.
Bungoma Senator David Wafula Wakoli has been elected as his replacement, effective immediately.
The announcement was formally communicated to the Senate on Tuesday by Speaker Amason Kingi, who confirmed that the decision met all procedural and legal thresholds under Standing Order 22.
According to the Speaker’s communication, the change followed a meeting of the Majority Party held on December 2, 2025, whose minutes and attendance list were forwarded to his office by Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot.
The documents showed that senators resolved to remove Khalwale in line with Standing Order 22(5) and elected Wakoli to take over the position.
“I am satisfied that the change was made in accordance with Standing Order 22(5) and (7) of the Senate, and meets the threshold required. The office holder, therefore, is Sen. David Waful Wakoli, MP,” Speaker Kingi said.
Khalwale’s removal marks a significant shift in the Senate leadership structure within the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
Wakoli, who now assumes the influential whip position, will be responsible for mobilising government business in the Senate and ensuring discipline among Majority Party senators.

Earlier, Senator Samson Cherargei of Nandi County had publicly called for Khalwale’s removal, citing his involvement in the recently concluded Malava constituency by-elections.
Cherargei criticised Khalwale for supporting a candidate outside the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.
During the Malava by-election, Khalwale campaigned alongside opposition leaders, including Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa, in support of Seth Panyako.
Panyako lost the contest, with UDA’s David Ndakwa winning the seat in a closely contested race.
