Residents of Elburgon Town in Molo, Nakuru County, have welcomed President William Ruto’s promise to upgrade the town into a city following the launch of the Boma Yangu Michinda Social Housing Project.

The President laid the foundation stone for the mega project, which will deliver 2,680 housing units to more than 9,300 new homeowners within the heart of the agriculturally rich town.

“We are working with the County Governments to ensure we give an opportunity to every Kenyan to own a dignified living space as they work and trade,” President Ruto said.

“We are keen to deliver our promise and are currently implementing the Affordable Housing Programme in 111 constituencies across the country.”

The residents hailed the project as a game changer, saying it will create jobs, expand business opportunities and transform the town’s outlook. They said the project would spur urbanization and improve the quality of life for the growing working population in Elburgon.

The mixed-use development includes 680 one-room units, 1,330 two-room units and 670 three-room units. It also features 35 shops to support small businesses within the residential area.

In addition to housing, residents will enjoy several amenities within a secure boundary wall. These include green spaces, a children’s playground, underground water storage, classroom blocks, dormitories, school offices, a service building and paved parking areas.

While in Nakuru, the President reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that every Kenyan has access to decent housing, noting that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader economic transformation agenda.

At the same time, construction has also begun on 382 housing units in Marigat Town, Baringo County, where the President laid another foundation stone on Tuesday afternoon.

“This programme is one of the key pillars of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA),” the President said.

“For this specific project in Marigat, we have already engaged over 80 local workers on-site with numbers expected to grow as we continue to implement the various steps of the project. We have reserved contracts for door, window and fitting fabrication to the local Jua Kali artisans, injecting millions of shillings into the informal economy.”

The 4.45-acre Marigat project will feature a variety of units under social, affordable and market housing typologies, along with facilities such as a kindergarten, clubhouse, social hall, borehole, and paved parking. Both projects incorporate energy-efficient designs, rainwater harvesting and accessible features for women, the elderly and persons with disabilities, advancing the government’s goal of sustainable and inclusive development.
