A 24-year-old former Radio Africa journalist was killed in a road accident involving a motorcycle and a concrete mixer along Uhuru Highway in Nairobi on Friday evening.

The accident occurred at about 5.30 p.m. near the University Way roundabout, according to police.

Police said the crash involved a Foton concrete mixer and a motorcycle.

Preliminary investigations indicate that both vehicles were travelling from the Westlands direction towards the city centre when the motorcycle rider reportedly hit the pavement, lost control and crashed into the left side of the concrete mixer.

The impact threw the pillion passenger, identified as 24-year-old Rose Mbugua, off the motorcycle.

She sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police officers visited and documented the scene before the body was moved to Nairobi's City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash are ongoing.

Friends and colleagues described her as a hardworking and humble journalist.

Fatal accidents have been on the rise despite efforts to address the problem, police say.

According to police, motorcycle accidents account for the highest number of such cases, according to police.

On Friday night alone, 13 people were killed in separate accidents.

They included five riders, two pedestrians, five passengers and one pillion passenger.

The accidents left more than 20 people with serious injuries.

The incidents are under investigation, police said.
