Bodies of the two minors have been successfully retrieved.

Sadness and grief have engulfed Kaweru village in Gaturi Ward, Murang’a county, after a 24-year-old woman allegedly threw her two children, aged seven and one, into River Mathioya.

Murang’a county police commander Kemboi Kimaiyo confirmed the incident, saying the suspect, identified as Lillian Wacera, is in police custody awaiting murder charges.

The bodies of the two minors have been successfully retrieved through joint efforts by law enforcement and area residents.

A family member, Nahason Mwangi, said he received the devastating news around 5 a.m. and immediately alerted other relatives.

“One child’s body was recovered on Wednesday evening, while the second was found early today (Thursday),” Mwangi added.

Another relative, Thomas Kimotho, appealed for government and public support as the family struggles to come to terms with the tragedy.

“This has come as a shock to us. We didn’t even know the mother had any mental health issues,” he said.

Kimotho revealed that the woman, who resides in Samburu, had traveled home to visit her ailing father, although it later emerged that her father was not unwell.

“We have not spoken to her husband yet, but we understand they were in communication, and he had sent her bus fare,” he added.
