The Senior Council Bar has mourned the death of Lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu, who was fatally shot on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, in Nairobi when he was driving from work.
The Council said the incident appeared to have been executed by a person well-trained in the use of firearms.
SCB said Mbobu will be remembered for his contribution in shaping the careers of several generations of lawyers, as a lecturer at the University of Nairobi and through his scholarly publications.
The Council stated that Mbobu will also be remembered for his public service as the Chairperson of the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal, amongst other assignments.
This cannot go on, and the SCB calls upon the political establishment to recognise the dangers inherent in such a situation.
"Kenya is at a crossroads in many respects, not least of which is the rule of law and the administration of justice. When actors in the justice chain, including judges, magistrates and advocates, come under attack, through threats, harm or even murder,” the statement said.
“Society as a whole is placed in jeopardy. This cannot go on, and the SCB calls upon the political establishment to recognise the dangers inherent in such a situation.”
SCB said no stone should be left unturned by the DCI to ensure that the perpetrators of the crime are brought to book.
“While the SCB and LSK have received and accepted the personal assurances of the Director of CID for a diligent and comprehensive investigation. The SCB calls upon investigators to bring the perpetrators to justice as soon as possible,” SCB added.
“It is only in this way that the confidence will be restored in the legal profession, that the law enforcement agencies view advocates as partners in the administration of justice, rather than opponents, and adversaries.”
DCI has since launched investigations into the fatal shooting of the prominent lawyer.
“After securing the scene, detectives from the DCI Homicide Bureau, supported by experts from the National Forensic Laboratory, carefully examined the scene and collected critical evidence essential to the investigations,” DCI said.
The DCI assured that it is committed to ensuring that the perpetrators of the heinous act are brought to justice.
“Our investigators are working diligently, employing all available resources and expertise to piece together the events surrounding this incident,” it added.
The directorate further appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigations to report to the nearest police station.
Anyone with information can use the #FichuaKwaDCI toll-free number 0800 722 203 or forward the information confidentially to the DCI through WhatsApp number 0709 570 000.
“We appeal for calm during this challenging time and request the public's cooperation as we work to resolve this case,” DCI urged.
“We are determined to provide the justice that Lawyer Kyalo Mbobu and his loved ones deserve”.
