City lawyer Kyalo Mbobu was on Tuesday evening shot dead along Magadi Road in Nairobi in what detectives say appears to have been a targeted killing.
The incident occurred at around 5.40pm as Mbobu was headed home.
According to police, he was trailed by two men on motorcycles who opened fire on his vehicle before fleeing the scene.
Reports on how many times he was shot remain conflicting, though police confirmed he was hit multiple times.
Mbobu, a seasoned lawyer with over 29 years of legal practice, previously served at the Political Parties Disputes Resolution Tribunal.
Following the shooting, detectives processed the scene and moved his body to the Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi.
His vehicle was later towed to Lang’ata Police Station as investigations got underway.
Police have not yet established the motive behind the shooting or identified the gunmen.
However, a detective involved in the case said the team is treating the incident as a targeted killing.
Investigators plan to review CCTV footage along Lang’ata Road in an effort to track down the attackers.
The shooting caused a massive traffic snarl-up along Lang’ata and Magadi roads as officers sealed off the scene temporarily to collect evidence.
As of 9pm, Mbobu’s family had not yet been notified of the tragedy.
The killing bears striking similarities to the April 30 shooting of former Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were, who was trailed by a lone assailant on a sports motorbike after leaving Parliament.
Were was followed from the CBD to the Daystar University roundabout near the Nairobi Funeral Home (formerly City Mortuary), where he was shot dead.
His vehicle had stopped at a traffic light on Ngong Road where the shooter, riding pillion on a motorcycle, dismounted and opened fire.
The assailant fled back towards the city centre on the same motorbike.
Like in Mbobu’s case, the motive remains unclear, and the investigation into Were’s killing is still active.
