A suspect accused of killing two elderly couples in Chumvini, Taita Taveta County, was lynched by a mob just two days after the brutal murder.
The couple, 82-year-old Tito Musyoka and his wife Angela Thambi, 73, were attacked in their home on August 28.
Their bodies were later found lying on their bed with deep cuts on the neck.
Police said the assailant had ransacked the house before fleeing. The woman died at the scene, while her husband was rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.
On Saturday, angry residents cornered their son, Musyoka Mohamed, at El-Rarai Market as he rode a motorcycle.
Witnesses said the mob interrogated him briefly before stoning him to death and setting his body on fire.
Police officers who arrived at the scene found the suspect’s body burning. They condemned the lynching and warned locals against taking the law into their own hands, saying investigations into the couple’s murder were still ongoing.
The bodies of the elderly couple, as well as that of their son, were moved to the mortuary for autopsies.
The killings have left the Chumvini community in shock, with police maintaining a presence in the area as detectives piece together the motive behind the attack.
Meanwhile, in Muhoroni, Kisumu County, police have launched investigations after a human skeleton was discovered inside a locked house.
The remains are believed to belong to Saline Akinyi and were found on August 30 in Igoche village by her grandchildren, who had gone to clean the house.
Police said the skeleton appeared soiled and bore a scar on the head, suggesting foul play. The remains were taken to the mortuary for an autopsy as detectives work to establish the cause and motive of death.
