Fifteen people were injured in a night accident at Kibarani, Mombasa, after a public service vehicle collided with a cargo truck.

The crash occured on Sunday night, August 24, 2025.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident in a statement, saying the injured were rescued by members of the public and rushed to nearby hospitals.

It added that its officers had joined a multi-agency team to help with rescue operations.

By press time, police had not issued a formal statement on the cause of the crash.

The accident comes barely two days after Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir released a report linking the recent spike in road accidents to poor infrastructure, reckless driving, and unroadworthy vehicles.

“Our findings underscore that poorly maintained roads, reckless driving, and vehicle defects remain the leading causes of fatalities,” Chirchir said while unveiling the report.

He added that the ministry will prioritise repairing dangerous sections of highways while working with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to enforce stricter compliance with KS 372:2019 standards through tougher vehicle inspections.

According to ministry data, 2,933 people lost their lives in road accidents between January 1 and August 10, 2025.
