The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning for increased rainfall and isolated storms expected across several parts of the country between Tuesday, August 12, and Monday, August 18, 2025.

According to the weekly forecast, residents in the Central Highlands, Western and parts of the North-western region should brace for intensified rainfall, with some areas likely to experience localised thunderstorms.

“Intermittent cold and cloudy conditions may occur over parts of the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, South-eastern Lowlands and the Rift Valley,” Met added.

Additionally, temperature variations are expected across the country.

North-eastern and North-western regions may see daytime highs above 30°C, while night-time temperatures could fall below 10°C in parts of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley and areas near Mt Kilimanjaro.

The department also cautioned about strong southerly to south-easterly winds, expected to exceed 25 knots (12.86 m/s).

These are particularly along the Coast, Kenya’s territorial waters, and parts of the South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern and North-western regions.

Regional weather highlights

The Western and Rift Valley counties, such as Kakamega, Kisumu, Nakuru and Kericho, are likely to experience showers and thunderstorms in the afternoons, with occasional rainfall in the mornings and evenings.

Daytime temperatures are expected to range between 28°C and 30°C, while night temperatures may dip to around 11°C.

In the North-western region (Turkana, Samburu), while the first half of the week will remain mostly sunny, isolated afternoon storms and night showers are likely toward the end of the week.

Maximum daytime temperatures will peak at 35°C, with nighttime lows as low as 8°C in parts of the region.

Areas along Central Kenya and Nairobi are expected to experience cloudy mornings, breaking into sunny intervals, followed by afternoon showers in some locations.

Saturday may bring more widespread rainfall. Minimum temperatures could fall to 8°C, especially midweek, while maximum temperatures will hover around 26–27°C.

In the North-eastern region, dry and sunny conditions will persist in counties like Mandera, Garissa and Wajir throughout much of the week.

However, light showers may develop in some areas by Saturday night. Daytime highs are expected to remain steady at 33–35°C.

Kenyans along the South-eastern lowlands are advised to expect cloudy mornings followed by sunny afternoons throughout the forecast period.

No significant rainfall is expected, and maximum temperatures will range from 28°C to 30°C, with cooler nights as low as 9°C by the weekend.

The Coastal region of Mombasa, Kilifi and Lamu will remain generally warm, with sunny intervals during the day and occasional light showers, particularly on Friday and Saturday.

Daytime highs will stay around 28–30°C, with humid nights ranging between 19–21°C.

The public is advised to exercise caution, particularly in areas prone to flooding or strong winds, and to stay updated through official forecasts and advisories.

Met also urged mariners and those near coastal areas to take caution due to strong winds and rough seas.
