Former Chief Justice David Maraga has promised to protect Kenyans’ wealth if elected president in the 2027 General Election.

Maraga made the remarks during a town hall meeting in Kirinyaga County, where he continued his nationwide tour to seek support for his presidential bid.

“If you allow me to be your leader, I will take care of your wealth. I will make sure those I will work with in government—the ministers, Principal Secretaries and others—will account for every coin they receive in their respective departments,” he said.

“I will have an economic team to audit every proposal to confirm that the requested amount is merited before releasing the money. I will also ensure end-of-year account reviews for every coin given,” he added.

Maraga said the approach would ensure that sectors such as education, health, and infrastructure are adequately funded.

He sharply criticised the government for what he termed as misappropriating public funds, citing excessive allocations to State House operations and disbursement of funds to ghost schools.

He claimed this has led to economic decline, youth unemployment, and stalled projects, including roads, schools, and hospitals.

“A large sum of money is being allocated to less priority institutions,” Maraga said.

He also dismissed the government’s empowerment programs, terming them a tactic to deceive citizens. He urged Kenyans to question the origin of such funds.

“The money coming to you in the form of empowerment is your money... and is now being returned to you to show that they care,” he said.

Maraga further pledged to uphold the rule of law if elected, saying the country’s problems stem from the failure to enforce legal and governance frameworks.

Maraga on July 30 announced a three-day county tour that will kick off in Kirinyaga County on August 1, followed by Meru on August 2, and Isiolo on August 3.

The county visits mark the beginning of what he calls a people-centred campaign aimed at reclaiming the values of justice, integrity, and servant leadership.

“See you in the great counties of Kirinyaga, Meru, and Isiolo!” Maraga declared in a rallying message posted alongside his tour itinerary.

Maraga, who served as Kenya’s 14th Chief Justice and is widely remembered for his historic 2017 Supreme Court ruling that nullified a presidential election, is positioning himself as a reformist candidate focused on restoring public trust in leadership.

The tour, themed under #ThePeopleShall, is expected to be the first in a series of grassroots engagements targeting regions often overlooked in mainstream political mobilisation.
