A section of opposition leaders has called on the Independent Policing and Oversight Authority (IPOA) to act on the issue of police brutality witnessed in Murang’a County on Sunday, July 27, 2025.
Speaking at the People’s Liberation Party headquarters alongside Eugene Wamalwa and Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua said they had presented evidence showing the assault of opposition leaders to IPOA and expected the authority to treat the matter with the seriousness it deserves.
“Any attempt to unlawfully take the life of a human being, regardless of their ethnicity, gender, or rank, ought to be condemned in the strongest way possible,” she said.
She further called on IPOA to hold the commanding officers responsible for the assaults accountable.
Karua added that they would not allow criminal acts and subversion of the rule of law to continue under the guise of orders from superiors.
"We have heard President William Ruto saying 'enough is enough,' but we remind him, as an employee, you can never tell your employer 'enough is enough'," Karua said.
Wamalwa also condemned the brutality and harassment witnessed in Subukia and Murang’a recently.
“We strongly condemn the growing trend of state-sponsored intimidation, violence, and blatant abuse of power aimed at silencing opposition leaders and disrupting our peaceful rallies. No amount of threats or harassment will break our resolve,” Wamalwa asserted.
He said they will continue to defend the constitutional right to assemble, speak, and lead without fear, and demanded action by IPOA on the complaint lodged by their team against the rogue officers.
Sunday’s incident marked the second consecutive week that a planned political event by allies of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua was disrupted.
Police reportedly lobbed teargas and blocked the group’s procession in Murang’a county, sparking clashes.
Eyewitness accounts and video footage confirm that chaos erupted shortly after a church service at AIPCA Christ the King Church in Kahuro.
Legislators allied with Gachagua had gathered there ahead of a scheduled meet-the-people tour.
