Wave of suspected suicides claims lives of three men in one week

Incidents reported in rural parts of Uasin Gishu, Machakos, and Kilifi counties.

A 36-year-old man was on Tuesday been found dead in an apparent case of suicide in Labuywet Village, Turbo Sub-County.

The deceased, identified as Samson Shikuta, is reported to have taken his own life by hanging inside his house.

The incident was reported by Damaris Khayati, a resident of the area.

Police officers from Kipkaren River Police Station, led by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), visited the scene and confirmed the incident.

According to the report, "no suicide note was found."

The scene was documented, and necessary police action was taken. The body was moved to Village of Hope Hospital morgue for preservation.

A post-mortem examination is pending. Police say the case is pending under investigation.

In a similar case, a 36-year-old man was found dead in a suspected case of suicide in Matithini Village, Masinga Sub-County.

The deceased, identified as Fidelis Kithaka Mule, was discovered by his mother, Susan Mule, while she was with her grandchildren on their grazing land.

Police officers from Kithyoko Police Station, together with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCIO) Masinga, visited the scene.

They found the lifeless body lying about 500 metres away from the deceased's house, in the bush.

According to the police report, the deceased's "mouth had some vomit smelling like the one container next to him, known as Grandometer 480EC, which is used to kill termites."

No physical injuries or suicide note were found at the scene. Police said the scene was "well processed and necessary [action] taken."

The body was moved to Mbaku Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination. The case is pending under investigation.

Elsewhere, a 38-year-old man was found dead in Bongoni Village, Ganze Sub-County, in a suspected suicide case.

The deceased, identified as Athumani Wadhengi Karisa, reportedly hanged himself on a tree in a bush within the village.

According to a police report, the incident was reported Mr. Shikari Kalume, the assistant chief of Dangarani Sub-Location.

Officers from Bamba Police Station visited the scene and confirmed the death. They found the deceased's body hanging from a tree using a “piece of cloth (khanga) tied tight round his neck.”

No visible injuries were observed. Police said the man had left his home the previous evening, July 19, at around 7:00 pm carrying the same cloth used in the incident.

He did not inform his wife, Jumwa Karisa Shikari, of where he was going. The body was discovered at around 6:00 am by a resident, Kalume Kahindi Kiboni.

The scene was documented, and the body moved to Kilifi County Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem. No suicide note was found. Investigations are ongoing.
