Amnesty International Kenya has called for the immediate release of blogger and activist Ndiangui Kinyagia, who has been missing since Saturday, 21 June, following a reported raid on his residence in Kinoo.
The rights organisation alleged that he was picked up by people suspected to be detectives.
In a statement, Amnesty International demanded that Kinyagia either be released or presented before a court of law, rather than being held incommunicado.
Activist Boniface Mwangi also raised alarm, alleging that Kinyagia could be undergoing torture
“This man is being held, and likely tortured in a detention hole,” Mwangi claimed.
Mwangi described the blogger’s disappearance as part of a broader pattern of injustice against young people expressing dissent.
According to family members, Kinyagia, a 31-year-old IT expert and prominent online commentator, vanished under suspicious circumstances after men believed to be detectives surrounded his apartment block in Kinoo.
Witnesses report that the men arrived in several unmarked vehicles and remained outside the premises for nearly nine hours before forcibly gaining entry into his home.
The calls for Kinyagia’s release come as pressure continues to mount on authorities to account for his whereabouts, six days since he was last seen.
The blogger had previously claimed responsibility for designing a protest "time table" intended to guide demonstrators towards State House.
His family reported the incident to Kinoo police station, but officers there denied knowledge of the operation or Kinyagia’s whereabouts.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has since taken up the case.
LSK president Faith Odhiambo condemned the incident, warning that it signalled a dangerous erosion of constitutional protections.
“This is a blatant violation of Article 49 of the Constitution and a breach of the Criminal Procedure Code,” the LSK said in a statement.
The society is preparing a court application to compel police to produce Kinyagia in court and explain the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
According to his family, Kinyagia has been held incommunicado, with his mobile phones switched off and no information on his condition or location.
Widely known online through his X account Daguin Dd, Kinyagia had been instrumental in mobilising support for the Gen Z protest anniversary.
His disappearance has sparked national concern over rising cases of enforced disappearances and shrinking civic space in Kenya.
