The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (Ketraco) has successfully energised the Awendo–Isebania (Masaba) Transmission Line, marking a significant milestone in improving electricity reliability and supply stability across Migori County and the wider South Nyanza region.

The 28-kilometre, 132kV single-circuit line, completed on 7 June, forms part of the Kenya Power Transmission Expansion Project (KPTEP), which aims to improve access to electricity in underserved areas.

The project was implemented by China Aerospace Construction Group Co. Limited (CACGC).

It includes the construction of a new 132kV substation at Isebania (Masaba) and the extension of the existing 132/33kV Awendo Substation.

Ketraco collaborated with the Kenyan government and the EXIM Bank of China to finance the project at a cost of Sh1.32 billion.

A new bulk supply point at Masaba will now directly serve the towns of Isebania, Migori and Kehancha.

Ketraco stated that this strategic upgrade shortens Kenya Power’s distribution lines, significantly reducing the frequency and duration of outages.

Improved power quality is expected to benefit key institutions in the region, including the Sony Sugar Factory, Migori County Referral Hospital, Getonyanya Sweet Potatoes Factory, and the Isebania One Border Post (IOBP).

The upgrade is also anticipated to stimulate growth in small businesses, manufacturing, and overall investment.

Previously, the region relied on a stretched 33/11kV line from the Awendo Substation, covering nearly 26 kilometres—an inefficient setup that often led to unstable power and frequent outages, particularly amid rising demand.

This achievement follows a Project Agreement signed between Ketraco and Adani Energy Solutions Limited.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, speaking during the signing on 11 October 2024, stated that the project was estimated to cost $736 million (Sh95.68 billion).

The Cabinet Secretary added that the initiative will strengthen the national electricity infrastructure, including transmission lines and substations.

Adani Energy Solutions was to manage the transmission line for 30 years to ensure long-term sustainability and efficiency, after which the project and its assets would be handed over to Ketraco.

The high court, however, issued an injunction on October 25, 2024, preventing the implementation of the deal until the court resolves the case.
