President William Ruto has promised to secure a job for the World Marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum's wife, Asenath Rotich.
Kiptum is survived by a widow and two children.
Speaking on Friday during the burial ceremony, the President said that he would discuss with Elgeyo Marakwet governor Wesley Rotich to find a spot for Kiptum's wife.
Ruto said that Kiptum's wife should have a job to be able to support her family.
"Kwa Mama Asenath, nitaketi chini na Governor wenyu alafu tukubaliene ile kazi itamtosha ndio aweze kusimamia watoto wa Kelvin Kiptum," he said.
(Concerning Mama Asenath, I will have a sit down with the governor to agree and see what position she will have so that she can support Kiptum's children).
Leaders who spoke earlier during the ceremony had called on the government to offer her state job.
Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei asked Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wesley Rotich to give the widow a job in the county.
This, he said, will ensure the widow is closer to home and always near the family and her children.
"I would like to request the governor to consider employing Kiptum's wife within the county so that she remains here or near the family as she takes care of their young children," Tuwei said.
Keiyo South MP Gideon Kimaiyo also made a similar appeal.
“The family had hoped that Kevin would now change their lives, but he is no more. I want to ask you the president to give Kevin’s wife a job at the national government so that he can take care of these children,’” Kimaiyo said.
The MP said that if the wife is empowered, she will take care of the children and the family of Kiptum.
"The Head of the Public Service came here and we told him that. Please we ask that she be considered for a job," he said.
Before the burial ceremony, the President ordered the construction of a three-bedroom house in honour of the World Marathon record holder.
The house was built in a record six days following a directive by the President.
It is located at his four-acre Naiberi farm in Uasin Gishu, some 20 kilometres from Eldoret town.
Vaghjiyani Enterprises Limited was contracted to do the work.
Ruto on Friday announced that the government will gift Kiptum's family another house.
The President said that the move was in recognition of Kiptum's achievements.
