Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has said Monday’s Supreme Court verdict will mark a moment of truth for Kenyans.
He said the seven bench judges will deliver a judgement that will truly reveal what transpired in the August 9 General Election and the tallying process.
“What Kenyans want is not miracles. They want justice. We want Kenyans to be patient. Because we will know the truth and justice will be done,” Wamalwa added.
The CS was speaking on Saturday in Bungoma, where he attended the burial service of the late Peter Mwangale.
Going further, Wamalwa called upon the Supreme court to deliver justice after it emerged that Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was not speaking in the same voice on the day the presidential results were announced.
On August 15, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati declared Deputy President William Ruto the President-elect after he defeated Raila and two other candidates in the poll on August 9.
Ruto was declared the winner with 7,176,141 votes, representing 50.49 per cent of the votes cast, against Raila’s 6,942,930 votes, or 48.85 per cent of the votes cast.
However, before the results were announced, there was a stand-off between IEBC Commissioners at the Bomas of Kenya over the presidential results.
They had failed to agree on the final tally, and some of them have refused to sign on the same.
Four out of the seven commissioners are said to be in disagreement with the final tally over discrepancies.
They included IEBC vice chairman Juliana Cherera, Francis Wanderi, Irene Masit and Justus Nyang'aya.
Also,Raila rejected the results terming them "null and void" and promised a bruising battle at the Supreme Court.
He filed a petition at the Supreme Court challenging Ruto’s win in the August 9 poll.
The Supreme Court is expected to deliver its verdict on the presidential petition on Monday, September 5, 2022.
CS Wamalwa further bashed Kenyans who have been praising IEBC chairperson, branding him a hero, yet the verdict has not been issued.
“Those of you who have been praising Chebukati that he is a hero, that he did miracles for you, the jury is still out. On Monday, we will know if Chebukati is a hero or a villain,” he noted.
Former Attorney General Githu Muigai who represented the IEBC boss in the petition said he was a hero.
“At an appropriate time when all this is over, I entertain no doubt that an independent group of people looking at the work that Chebukati has done for our nation will recognize him as one of our outstanding heroes in the history of our nation,” Gitu said.
