Maseno School is keen to return to the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) rugby 7s national championships.
The school’s director of sports, Caleb Olang’o, said they have stepped up preparations for Term Two games.
This weekend’s Maseno School Elite Tournament will form part of their pre-season training.
The tournament will be held at the institution on Saturday and Sunday, where participating teams will pay a Sh2,500 entry fee.
The inaugural contest will feature rugby 7s and basketball 3x3 for both boys and girls, said Olang’o.
“The last time we were at nationals was in 2023. Our target is to make a comeback,” said Olang’o.
Maseno featured in the basketball 3x3 competition at last year’s national championships after North Eastern failed to field a team.
Among the teams enlisted for the weekend competition are former national 15s champions, Butula Boys, Nyanza regional 7s champions St Mary’s School Yala, Bungoma High School, Kabianga High and Agoro Sare.
The schools will field both rugby 7s and basketball 3x3 teams.
“The tournament has attracted teams from Nyanza, Western, and Rift Valley. We expect more to confirm their participation (before the weekend),” added Olang’o.
Nyanza regional 5x5 basketball champions, Sawagongo High School, will feature as they prepare to challenge for the 5x5 and 3x3 basketball titles.
After losing the Nyanza regional 5x5 title to Sawagongo, Agoro Sare will go all out for the 3x3 title.
Coach Paul Odok said, “I want to use the Maseno tournament as part of our pre-season. Our target is to qualify for nationals in 3x3.”
At the same time, the Kinale Open Tournament will take place on Saturday and Sunday at the school. The tournament will feature volleyball, rugby 7s, netball, and football.
The school’s sports head of department, Stephen Karanja said the tournament will feature junior and senior secondary school teams.
