The Sports Cabinet Secretary, Salim Mvurya, is calling on Kenyans to unite in support of the national football team, Harambee Stars, during the upcoming Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) as a display of national pride and unity.
Mvurya said CHAN 2024 offers Kenya a chance to demonstrate its patriotism and solidarity as it co-hosts the tournament with Uganda and Tanzania. "I urge all Kenyans to come together, not just in support of a football team, but in celebration of our unity, national pride, and unwavering patriotism. Let us show the world that supporting Harambee Stars goes beyond cheering from the stands; it is a declaration of love for our country, as one people, one flag, one nation," he said.
"Let us set aside our differences and rally behind our national team. Together, we can foster a peaceful, vibrant atmosphere that welcomes fans from around the world and reflects the true spirit of our nation," he said.
"This is more than just a football tournament—it is our moment to affirm Kenya’s place on the global stage as a premier destination for both international events and sports tourism," he added.
He made the remarks at the Stadion Hotel in Nairobi on Thursday during the official unveiling of the squad that will hoist the nation's flag. Mvurya reckons the unveiling of the provisional squad for Harambee Stars marks a significant step towards preparing for the championship.
The Sports Cabinet Secretary praised the leadership of the Football Kenya Federation and the technical team's commitment to developing a competitive football squad. "I'm honoured to join the FKF as they proudly unveil the Harambee Stars provisional squad, a significant milestone in our journey toward greatness, and a critical step as we prepare for the much-anticipated African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024," Mvurya said.
"I commend the FKF leadership, led by President Hussein Mohammed, and the technical team under head coach Benni McCarthy. Their discipline, commitment to excellence, and clarity of purpose are not only shaping a competitive squad but also nurturing a new generation of football excellence in Kenya," he added.
Mvurya emphasised the importance of creating a welcoming atmosphere for fans and representing Kenya's spirit during the tournament. Beyond football, the CHAN is an opportunity for Kenya to highlight its potential as a destination for international events and sports tourism, he said. The CS urged Kenyans to come together, transcending political differences, in support of the national team and to promote national pride.
He conveyed a message to the players, encouraging them to embody the hopes and aspirations of over 50 million Kenyans and compete honourably. "To our players: seize this moment! You carry the hopes and dreams of more than 50 million Kenyans. Compete with honour, and play with heart, because when you rise, Kenya rises. The nation stands firmly behind you!"
