Japan ambassador to Kenya Hiroshi Matsuura believes their support for Kenyan badminton will serve as a bridge for sporting collaboration while accelerating inclusion, especially for para-athletes.
Speaking on Friday morning at the Embassy of Japan, when they donated training equipment and kit, the envoy said their support reflects Japan’s continued commitment to supporting social transformation through sport.
“We are delighted to strengthen our friendship with Kenya through sports,” said Matsuura. “These donations, sourced from communities and supporters across Japan, reflect our shared belief in the power of sports to inspire hope, unity and achievement.”
The handover event, hosted by the Embassy of Japan in partnership with the Badminton Association of Japan (BAJ), saw a consignment of equipment presented to two key associations — Badminton Kenya and the Kenya Para-Badminton Federation.
The donation included 70 rackets, 180 shuttlecocks, 10 uniforms and 10 racket covers.
“Beyond the rackets and uniforms, this event shows how sport can connect people, bring communities together and foster resilience,” added Matsuura.
Badminton Kenya chairperson Peter Muchiri said while badminton remains a developing sport in Kenya, the event marked a significant boost in both material support and international goodwill.
“This equipment will go a long way in strengthening our junior and community badminton programmes,” said Muchiri.
“We are especially encouraged by the inclusion of para-badminton athletes, which ensures nobody is left behind in the growth of this sport.”
The Kenya Para Badminton Federation said the gesture is an affirmation of recognition and inclusion.
“This support not only uplifts our athletes but also validates our efforts to raise the profile of para-badminton in Kenya,” said para badminton president Jennifer Kamande.
