Kenya Cup champions Kabras Sugar will be the star attraction during the Kitale Sevens, slated for this weekend at the Kitale Club.

The sugarmillers are using the tournament as a build-up ahead of the National Sevens Series, which starts in Mombasa with Prinsloo Sevens.

Assistant coach Max Adaka is keen to see his charges get the tactics right before the start of the series and address the strengths and weaknesses of the side.

"We have a very young group of exciting players who have worked hard in the last month and a half. We want to see where we are as a team and look at improving our facets of play," added Adaka.

He said the target for the side is to win the overall circuit after two years of near misses. Last season, the club bagged 105 points to finish second, five points behind eventual winners Quins.

In the 2023 season, they finished second with 104 points, losing out to KCB, who topped the overall standings with 113 points.

“We have come close for the past two years, and I am confident we can finally land the Sevens crown."

Kabras last won the National Sevens title in 2017 under the tutelage of former coach Charles Cadovillis. Adaka is expected to hand debut Job Wetangula, who was named MVP of the Webuye 10 aside tournament in December last year.

Others include Rayvon Ambale, a Kabras Academy graduate, who has also been included in the squad after returning from a stint in the United Kingdom.

Ambale was instrumental in helping Kabras win the 2024 Great Rift 10's alongside Bravin Onyango Otieno and Johnson Ombago from Menengai Oilers.

The Kakamega-based side are in Pool A, where they face Webuye, Kitale National Poly and Samurai Wakulima. Kenya Cup regulars Kisumu will headline Pool B, where they will battle it out against Kitale Veterans, Kisiwa Institute and Bukembe in Pool B while Sigalagala, P61 Eldoret, Bungoma and Kibingei make up Pool C.

The women’s competition has attracted four teams, namely Eldoret TENP, Kitale National Poly, Cranes Kitale and Kitale Community. St Emmanuel Mururii is on standby.
