Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s decision to wage war against illicit alcohol is a welcome initiative.

He deserves the support of the entire nation because alcohol addiction poses a threat to millions of young men and women.

Large swathes of youth have been made zombies as long-suffering parents watch helplessly.

The wide ranging draconian alcohol fiat announced last week in which all licences were suspended is a step in the right direction.

Even though the DP's key focus is on Mt Kenya youth, there are other silent drug problems in most parts of the country that deserve national attention.

At the Coast, Northeastern and Eastern regions, bhang, cocaine, heroine, miraa and muguka have rendered many energetic youth into helpless dependants.

In Marsabit and Isiolo, marijuana from Ethiopia is wreaking havoc.

Corrupt police officers have contributed to a thriving illegal epidemic.

Jobless youth idle languidly under trees and outside shops looking dazed all day long.
