Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is now calling on the international community to intervene after the alleged abduction of Juja MP George Koimburi.
Speaking after visiting Koimburi who is admitted at the Karen Hospital, he said the international community must take note of what is happening in the country.
“Let me appeal to the international community to take a great interest in what is happening in Kenya and we have seen what is happening in the neighbouring countries, Tanzania, the suppression of civil society, all those things stem from Kenya,” Gachagua said.
His remarks came after Koimburi, a key ally, was rushed to the hospital on Monday morning after he was found alive, dumped in Jacaranda coffee plantation, Kibichoi, Kiambu.
Police denied any involvement, claiming instead that Koimburi staged his abduction.
They have since launched an investigation into the incident and taken samples to different laboratories to determine what happened.
The MP was picked up from the plantation, nearly 12 hours after his family and friends reported he had been kidnapped in the Mugutha area.
Gachagua also alleged that the government has begun targeting opposition MPs by withdrawing their security detail.
“Bodyguards of MPs opposed to the regime have been disarmed so that the lawmakers they are attached to feel vulnerable and stop going for meetings,” he claimed.
The former DP also gave an update on Koimburi’s state, claiming that the Juja MP was administered a chemical that interfered with his vocal cords.
He claimed the MP has lost his voice and is currently unable to speak.
He stated that doctors informed Koimburi’s family the loss of voice was due to a chemical allegedly injected into his body during his abduction.
“He was abducted in full view of church members by a squad that also attempted to harm his wife. His whereabouts were unknown until Monday morning, when he was discovered at a coffee plantation in Kibichoi, Githunguri Constituency,” Gachagua stated.
“He was found badly beaten and tortured, and unable to speak. Doctors have confirmed Koimburi was subjected to torture and sustained serious soft tissue injuries, which they say appear to be inflicted by professionals. A chemical was administered through inhalation, and it has affected his vocal cords. The doctors have assured us that they are doing everything to ensure he is out of danger.”
