Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua arrives at the Karen Hospital on May 26, 2025/HANDOUT

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that Juja MP George Koimburi, who is admitted to the Karen Hospital, was administered a chemical that interfered with his vocal cords.

Speaking at the hospital on Monday, May 26, 2025, Gachagua claimed the MP has lost his voice and is currently unable to speak.

He stated that doctors informed Koimburi’s family the loss of voice was due to a chemical allegedly injected into his body during his abduction.

“He was abducted in full view of church members by a squad that also attempted to harm his wife. His whereabouts were unknown until Monday morning, when he was discovered at a coffee plantation in Kibichoi, Githunguri Constituency,” Gachagua stated.

“He was found badly beaten and tortured, and unable to speak. Doctors have confirmed Koimburi was subjected to torture and sustained serious soft tissue injuries, which they say appear to be inflicted by professionals. A chemical was administered through inhalation, and it has affected his vocal cords. The doctors have assured us that they are doing everything to ensure he is out of danger.”

The former DP said the MP had managed to write down his ordeal, as he could not speak.

“In the process, he lost his voice, which doctors say was due to a harmful chemical substance that was injected into his body,” Gachagua claimed.

“But doctors are working to restore his voice.”

Koimburi, a key ally of Gachagua, was rushed to the hospital on Monday morning after being found alive, dumped in Jacaranda coffee plantation, Kibichoi, Kiambu.

Police have denied any involvement, claiming instead that Koimburi staged his abduction.

They have launched an investigation into the incident and taken samples to different laboratories to determine what happened.

The MP was picked up from the plantation on Monday morning, nearly 12 hours after his family and friends reported he had been kidnapped in the Mugutha area.

Police are trying to establish how those who found him knew where he was.

“His mobile phone has been off since Friday when police attempted to arrest him, but the operation was aborted,” an officer involved in the investigation stated.

According to the officer, on Friday, a team had tried to apprehend him as he left an event in Juja.

However, the MP alighted from his vehicle with a security officer and fled on a motorcycle.

His driver was arrested and taken to DCI headquarters for interrogation.

He told officers that Koimburi had instructed him to drop him off along the road after learning that police were planning to arrest him.

The arrest attempt is linked to a land case currently under investigation.

“Since then, he had been offline until Sunday, when reports emerged that he had been abducted or arrested. Hours later, we received reports that he had been found,” the officer claimed.

On Monday, a team visited the church where he was last seen, the site of the alleged abduction, the plantation where he was found, and two hospitals where he received treatment.
