The Kenya Editors’ Guild (KEG) has officially unveiled the list of validly nominated candidates for its much-anticipated elections, set to take place on Saturday, April 12, 2025.
The elections will determine new leadership across several key positions, including president, vice president, council members and trustees.
Veteran journalists Zubeidah Kananu and Yvonne Okwara will vie for the presidential seat, marking a high-stakes contest between two prominent figures in the media.
According to an official statement released by KEG Returning Officer, Advocate Sophie Kaibiria, the nominations have been thoroughly vetted and approved in accordance with the Guild’s Constitution and the KEG Elections Policy Guidelines dated March 3, 2025.
Kananu, who is the incumbent president and the first woman to hold the position, is seeking re-election.
She will face off against Okwara, an anchor at Citizen TV.
The race for the presidency is expected to be one of the most closely followed contests in the Guild’s history.
In other positions, Radio Africa Group’s Francis Openda is the sole nominee for Vice President and has been declared elected unopposed.
Similarly, Linda Bach (Print Media), Kenfrey Kiberenge (Online Media) and Millicent Awuor (Television) have all secured their places as Council Members, having been the only validly nominated candidates in their respective categories.
The Radio category will feature a contest between Toepista Nabusoba and Agnes Mwangangi, while the Academia category will see Nathan Nayere Masambu go head-to-head with Julius Ombui Bosire.
For the Trustee positions, three candidates—Martin Masai, Ruth Nesoba, and Mbugua Ng’ang’a—were validly nominated and have been declared elected.
As stipulated in section 4.3 of the KEG Election Guidelines, the Returning Officer has confirmed that all unopposed candidates (numbers 1 to 5) have been duly elected to the Council.
The publication of the official notice also marks the commencement of the campaign period, which will run until midnight on Friday, April 11, 2025.
Candidates have been reminded to adhere to the Elections Code of Ethics during this period.
With these elections set to shape the future of the country’s editorial community, KEG has urged its members to engage actively and uphold the values of integrity, professionalism and respect that they are guided by.
