She was married to church minister Daniel Basila for 14 years.
Speaking during a YouTube interview with Upendo Media, Bukuku said her marriage started cracking because her husband was swayed by opinions from people.
"That is what led to my divorce. My marriage was also broken by outsiders' advice," she said.
Bukuku says she passed through a hard time, adding that some of her most successful songs were created at that time.
"I passed through such a hard time. No one loves stress but the devil knows that for peace not to exist, there must be challenges."
Bukuku says despite having known her now ex-husband for years, he changed and became a completely different person.
The artiste said she met her ex before she became a household name.
He offered to sponsor her music videos as he saw something in her that other people couldn't.
"I never lacked money, although at the time, I was naive; I would go for shows and not get paid. I would call him to come to pick me up at the airport," she said.
"Sometimes he would approach a female friend of mine and send her to bring me gifts."
Speculation was rife that Bukuku slept with her husband's doctor so as to be let off a huge medical bill.
This was premised from her release of the single, 'Dunia Haina Huruma'.
The storyline of the video follows the life of a woman who struggled to raise money to offset a huge medical bill due to her husband's hospitalisation.
The woman is frustrated by the accrued bill and has no means of offsetting it.
She is propositioned by the doctor and she gives in because she wants her husband back home.
When she tells the husband about the one-off rendezvous, he gets angry and leaves her.
Bukuku said her divorce "somehow" inspired the storyline and theme of the single.
"Though there’s a part of the song which was drawn from my real-life experience. Irreconcilable differences was the premise for our divorce."
