The premiere of Strength of a Woman was held at the Prestige Plaza Planet Cinemas last Sunday to mark the International Women’s Day.

Praised as “an excellent film… about basic human dignity”, Manasseh M Chege and Wanjiru Gathu’s heartrending movie follows the remarkable and challenging story of Julia (played by Rose K Njoroge). She is a 16-year-old emotionally traumatised girl being raised by a financially struggling mother and an abusive father.

The film was the centrepiece of the International Women’s Day celebrations as the world celebrated the numerous gains and progress made to combat violence against women and advocate for women empowerment and education.

Strength of a Woman explicitly celebrates acts of courage and determination by one ordinary woman who plays an extraordinary role in her family and community. It is envisaged that the film will inspire many more women in Kenya to stand up and be agents of change.

After the premiere, the creators of the film will embark on a countrywide screening with the first phase targeting Nairobi in March, Nakuru in April, Kisumu in May, Eldoret in June, Mombasa in July and subsequently other major towns in the country.
