Kenya’s active taxpayer base has nearly doubled over the last six years, reflecting increased tax registration and compliance efforts by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
According to KRA data, the number of active taxpayers rose from 5.1 million in the 2018/19 financial year to 9.669 million in 2023/24.
Projections for the 2024/25 financial year estimate the figure will increase further to 9.87 million taxpayers.
The steady rise highlights growing participation in the formal tax system as the government pushes for expanded revenue collection to finance development projects and public services.
The largest jump was recorded between the 2021/22 and 2022/23 financial years, when active taxpayers increased from 7.225 million to 8.153 million.
KRA has in recent years intensified digital tax systems, taxpayer education, and enforcement measures to improve compliance and widen the tax base.
The figures also point to increased economic activity and the growing use of online tax platforms by individuals and businesses across the country.
