News and current affairs have firmly established a dominant stronghold over Kenya’s radio airwaves, capturing nearly half of the total consumption share.
According to the latest Communications Authority of Kenya audience measurement and industry trends report covering January to March 2026, news-driven programming commands a massive 46.67% of the audience. This substantial lead underscores a highly civic-minded and information-driven listenership across the country, turning to radio as their primary source of immediate truth and local reporting.
While information leads the pack, leisure and recreational audio content maintain a strong secondary presence. Entertainment and talk shows stand out as the next most popular radio format, accounting for 21.11% of the audience share.
Music follows closely behind, keeping 15.21% of Kenyan listeners tuned in, while sports programming secures a dedicated 13.94% share of the airwaves. Together, these three entertainment pillars form the core of daily daytime and drive-time broadcasting.
In contrast, specialised niche programming accounts for a much smaller fraction of the public's airtime. Religious and inspirational broadcasts draw a modest 6.39% share.
The remaining audience is divided almost equally between educational or informative segments at 1.03% and lifestyle or culture features at 1.02%.
Ultimately, while music and sports continue to hold steady ground, it is the hunger for timely news and engaging daily talk shows that continues to form the heartbeat of contemporary Kenyan radio.
