Road traffic injuries remain a major global public health challenge, killing an estimated 1.19 million people every year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
They are the leading cause of death among people aged 5–29 years and leave many survivors with permanent disabilities.
About 90% of deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, where road safety systems are often weaker.
Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists are the most vulnerable road users.
Key risk factors include speeding, alcohol and drug use, and distracted driving such as phone use.
Most road traffic injuries are preventable through safer roads, enforcement of traffic laws, and responsible behaviour by all road users.
