Kenya is witnessing strong female enrollment under the Social Health Authority (SHA), with major counties recording high registration numbers as the country shifts from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).
According to the 2026 Economic Survey, Nairobi City leads with 844,905 registered women, reflecting both its large population and increased awareness of health insurance benefits.
Kiambu follows with 442,033 registrations, while Nakuru recorded 387,976. Kakamega and Mombasa also posted impressive numbers, showing growing uptake beyond the capital region.
Other counties in the top 10 include Bungoma, Kisumu, Machakos, Homa Bay and Kisii.
The figures represent registrations since SHA officially replaced NHIF in October 2024. Experts say higher female registration is significant because women often play a central role in family healthcare decisions and maternal health access.
Increased enrollment is expected to improve access to medical services, reduce financial burdens during illness and strengthen the country’s push toward universal healthcare coverage for all citizens.
