The transition from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the Social Health Authority (SHA) on October 1, 2024, marked a pivotal shift in Kenya’s healthcare financing landscape.

Recent data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics 2026 Economic Survey reveals that Nairobi City leads the nation in SHA uptake, with over 1.6 million registered residents.

This significant lead highlights the impact of concentrated urban outreach and high employment density in the capital.

Central and Rift Valley regions also show robust engagement, with Kiambu and Nakuru following Nairobi with 832,307 and 730,260 registrations, respectively.

Coastal and Western regions are represented by Mombasa and Kakamega, both crossing the 700,000 mark.

Other top-performing counties include Bungoma, Kisumu, Machakos, Homa Bay, and Kisii.

These figures underscore a steady national momentum toward universal health coverage, reflecting a growing public confidence in the digital transition of health services and the systematic registration of beneficiaries across diverse geographical blocks.
