Manner of deaths in police killings, 2025/Rosa Mumanyi

A 2025 report on police-related deaths in Kenya highlights that most victims were killed by gunfire, making it the leading manner of death.

The data shows a significantly higher number of fatalities from shootings compared to other causes such as battery, deaths in police custody and torture, which recorded much lower figures.

The findings also reveal a stark gender disparity, with men accounting for about 90 per cent of those killed.

This suggests that men are far more likely to be victims of police violence.

The report further indicates that cases involving male victims tend to attract less public backlash, potentially increasing their vulnerability.

Deaths occurring in police custody and those linked to torture remain a concern, though they represent a smaller proportion of the total cases documented.

The report, compiled by Missing Voices and released in March 2026, underscores ongoing concerns about the use of force and accountability within law enforcement agencies in Kenya.
