Kenya’s consumption of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has continued to rise sharply over the past six years, even as the use of kerosene steadily declines.
New data from the Petroleum Institute of East Africa (PIEA), released on December 4, 2025, shows a clear shift in household energy preferences.
This is driven largely by changing policies, urbanisation, and a push toward cleaner cooking fuels.
According to the report, LPG consumption increased every year from 2019 to 2024, rising from about 300,000 metric tonnes in 2019 to more than 400,000 metric tonnes in 2024.
This steady growth reflects wider access to LPG cylinders, improved distribution, and government efforts to promote cleaner energy.
