What to know about World Habitat Day

World Habitat Day, designated by the United Nations, is celebrated annually on the first Monday of October to raise awareness about the state of urban areas and the basic human right to adequate shelter.

The day emphasises the shared responsibility for the future of human settlements and promotes themes like homelessness, urban crisis response, and sustainable development.

Each year features a new theme chosen by UN-Habitat to address pressing global issues related to cities and human settlements.

World Habitat Day was first celebrated in 1986 with the theme "Shelter is My Right". Nairobi was the host city for the observance that year.
