A new report by the Food Security Information Network highlights countries with the highest burden of acute malnutrition among pregnant and breastfeeding women in 2024.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo tops the list with 3.7 million affected, followed by Ethiopia (1.3 million), Sudan and Afghanistan (1.2 million each), and South Sudan (1.1 million).
These figures underscore the devastating impact of conflict, food insecurity, and weak health systems on vulnerable women.
Nigeria’s Northeast and Northwest regions (0.8 million) also feature prominently, alongside Yemen, Chad, Central African Republic, and Kenya’s ASALs (0.1 million).
The crisis reveals how maternal nutrition remains a pressing issue in fragile states, posing long-term risks to both mothers and infants.
