A routine night patrol in Nairobi's Kamukunji area turned violent after a police constable was slashed several times with a panga, forcing a fellow officer to shoot dead the attacker.

The dramatic incident unfolded at about 8.30 pm on Monday along Racecourse Road, where police said an unidentified man armed with a panga launched a sudden attack on the officer.

The constable sustained multiple deep cuts to the back of his head before a colleague intervened and opened fire, fatally shooting the assailant.

Police said the responding officer accidentally set his firearm to automatic mode instead of single-shot, leading to the discharge of 11 rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition during the confrontation.

The injured officer was rushed to a nearby clinic for emergency treatment before being transferred to Nairobi West Hospital, where he was admitted in fair condition.

Nairobi police boss Issa Mohamud said the officer is stable and recovering in hospital.

Senior police officers and detectives processed the scene and recovered a blood-stained panga believed to have been used in the attack.

The body of the unidentified suspect was moved to the city mortuary, where it awaits identification and a post-mortem examination.

Police have launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.

In a separate incident, detectives in Kilifi County are investigating the murder of a 67-year-old man whose body was found dumped in a maize plantation in Kaloleni Sub-County.

Police identified the victim as Harrison Charo Thoya, whose body was discovered on Monday evening in Chalani/Mihingoni sub-location, about 10 metres from a murram road inside a maize farm.

Investigators believe the victim was killed elsewhere before his body was dumped at the scene. He was found lying on his back with visible head injuries believed to have been inflicted using a blunt object.

The deceased's two sons told police that Harrison had left home on Sunday evening and failed to return.

His body was later discovered at about 2 pm on Monday by two women who had gone to the farm to collect leafy vegetables.

Crime scene investigators documented and processed the scene before the body was moved to Kilifi Referral Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Police said no arrests have been made and no exhibits were recovered as investigations continue to establish the motive and identify those behind the killing.
