Kenya Railways has confirmed that a Magadi train operated by Tata Chemicals Magadi Ltd caught fire at Simba Station in Kajiado County on Wednesday.
In a statement, the corporation said preliminary reports indicate that the fire is believed to have started after mechanical damage to the locomotive’s fuel tank, which resulted in fuel leakage and subsequent sparking.
"Investigations are underway to establish the exact cause of the incident," Kenya Railways said in a statement on its X account.
Kenya Railways also said it is in contact with Tata Chemicals Magadi Ltd following the incident and has dispatched a team to the scene to support response efforts.
The corporation further stated that it is working closely with Tata Chemicals Magadi Ltd to establish the circumstances surrounding the fire.
Kenya Railways added that more information will be released as it becomes available as investigations continue.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at Simba Station in Kajiado County.
Earlier, witnesses reported seeing flames engulfing the train as emergency responders and members of the public worked to contain the fire.
