Body of missing Grade Five girl found in Kakamega pit latrine

Police suspect she was assaulted before her body was disposed of in the latrine.

Detectives are investigating the death of a Grade Five girl whose body was found in a pit latrine after she had been reported missing, in Shinyalu, Kakamega County.

Police suspect the girl was assaulted, killed, and her body later disposed of in the pit latrine.

The incident occurred on Sunday, June 28. The motive for the killing had not been established, police said.

The girl had been missing since Saturday, prompting a search that ended when her body was discovered in the latrine, according to police.

She was a learner at Lukaya Primary School. Her body, which had visible injuries, was removed and taken to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures, police said.

No arrests had been made by Tuesday as investigators continued.

Meanwhile, police in Vihiga County have launched a murder investigation after a 42-year-old man who had reported being assaulted by a group of people was found dead in his house.

The body of Godfrey Ingasi was discovered on Sunday morning inside his home in Impaka Village, Serem Sub-location, Shamakhokho Location, Hamisi Sub-County.

According to police, the incident was reported at about 1 p.m., prompting officers from Cheptulu Police Station and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Hamisi to visit the scene.

Investigators found Ingasi's body inside the house with a swollen left leg and bruises on his back and left shoulder.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased was allegedly assaulted by seven people on June 25, 2026.

He reported the incident at Cheptulu Police Station the same day and identified several individuals whom he alleged were involved.

Police said Ingasi had been advised to seek medical treatment following the reported assault but later died from his injuries.

The scene was processed and documented before the body was moved to Jumuia Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Detectives have launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the death and trace those linked to the alleged assault.

Elsewhere, police in Bungoma County are investigating the death of a 32-year-old man who died after he was allegedly assaulted while on a drinking spree.

The deceased was identified as Peter Simiyu Sifuna.

According to police, Sifuna had been drinking with his cousin when he was allegedly attacked by people known to him. He sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to Naitiri Sub-County Hospital for treatment, where he died on Saturday.

His death was reported to Naitiri Police Post on Sunday by a family member after the body had been transferred to the Naitiri mortuary.

Police officers from Mukuyuni Police Station and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Bungoma North visited the mortuary and observed visible head injuries, with blood oozing from the deceased's mouth and nose.

The body remains at the Naitiri mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police have launched investigations into the incident and are pursuing those suspected of involvement in the fatal assault.
