United Alternative Government leaders at a past press conference / FILEThe United Alternative Government has announced that it will field a single candidate in the upcoming Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
According to the United Alternative Government, this follows an extensive consultation among coalition partners aimed at strengthening unity and improving its chances at the polls.
In a statement on Wednesday, the coalition said the by-election represents a key test of constitutional democracy and the sovereign will of the people and requires a coordinated political approach from its side.
The group said it had reached a principled agreement to rally behind one candidate under the coalition banner, with the nominee to be identified through an independent scientific survey and credible opinion polling.
According to the coalition, the process is intended to ensure that the most competitive aspirant is selected to represent the alliance in the contest.
“This approach reflects our commitment to unity, democracy, and evidence-based decision-making, while demonstrating that the national interest must always take precedence over individual political ambitions,” the statement read.
The coalition also called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), security agencies and other political actors to guarantee a peaceful, free, fair and transparent election process.
It warned against electoral malpractice, including voter bribery, misuse of public resources, intimidation of voters and the deployment of state machinery to influence the outcome.
“The people of Ol Kalou must be allowed to exercise their democratic right without fear, coercion, or interference,” the statement added.
The coalition said no voter should be subjected to pressure or inducements, insisting that elections must be decided freely and fairly.
This comes after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua-led DCP nominated former MCA Sammy Ngotho for the ticket.
Jubilee unveiled Wilson Kigwa as its candidate for the by-election following the conclusion of the party’s internal nomination process.
The Ol-Kalou seat fell vacant after the death of David Kiaraho, who was serving his third term on a Jubilee ticket.
Kiaraho passed on in March this year and was laid to rest in Tigoni, Limuru, in Kiambu County.
The National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetang'ula, issued a Gazette Notice declaring the position vacant following Kiaraho’s death.
Kiaraho died on March 29, 2026 while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital.
The IEBC has since scheduled the by-election for July 16, setting the stage for what is shaping up to be a high-stakes political battle in the Mt Kenya region.
