Man arrested/ FILEThe Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a suspected drug trafficker and recovered cannabis worth approximately Sh870,000 during an intelligence-led operation in Nairobi.
Detectives said the operation was conducted as part of efforts to combat narcotics trafficking within the city.
According to the DCI, officers recovered 29 kilograms of cannabis, which is believed to have been destined for distribution within Nairobi’s central business district and surrounding areas.
The suspect was taken into custody and is undergoing processing pending arraignment in court.
In a statement, the DCI said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks operating within the capital.
"The Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains steadfast in its commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and protecting the public from the harmful effects of narcotic substances," the agency said.
The arrest comes amid intensified operations by security agencies targeting the illegal drug trade across the country.
Similarly, on May 26, 2025, a suspect was arrested in Machakos town after police recovered a substance suspected to be cannabis during an operation prompted by a public tip-off.
Police officers based at the Machakos county headquarters said they acted on intelligence reports linking the suspect to suspected narcotics-related activities in the area.
During the operation, officers recovered the substance packed in a green sack and repackaged into 30 carrier bags. A motorcycle believed to be linked to the incident was also impounded.
Authorities said the recovered substance was subjected to further analysis to establish its exact nature.
The suspect was taken into custody and booked at Machakos Police Station pending arraignment as investigations continued.
Police said detectives were seeking to establish the origin of the recovered substance and determine whether the suspect was linked to a wider drug trafficking network.
The National Police Service attributed the success of the operation to information shared by members of the public.
"The National Police Service commends members of the public for their continued cooperation through information sharing," the service said at the time.
Police have continued to urge members of the public to report criminal activities through police stations and official reporting channels, saying community cooperation remains critical in the fight against narcotics trafficking.
Security agencies say they will sustain operations targeting the production, transportation and distribution of illegal drugs as part of broader efforts to protect communities from drug-related crime and its social consequences.
