The United States Embassy in Nairobi has launched the Freedom 250 Festival Tour at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

The launch starts a nationwide youth engagement programme ahead of US Independence Day celebrations, centred on innovation, technology, entrepreneurship, and cultural exchange.

The event, held at the university, is expected to bring together thousands of students for a full-day interactive experience.

"The event focuses on hands-on activities designed to connect young Kenyans with innovation, career opportunities, and collaboration," a statement by the embassy disclosed.

According to the US Embassy, over 6,000 students are expected to participate in the wider tour, which will be held at four universities across the country over the coming weeks.

Speaking during the launch, the US embassy’s acting public affairs officer Drew Giblin said the initiative is designed to strengthen people-to-people ties between Kenya and the United States.

“JKUAT represents the energy and innovation shaping Kenya’s future,” Giblin said.

“This tour is about giving young people opportunities to explore ideas, build skills, and connect with technology and mentorship in exciting ways.”

The Freedom 250 Tour features eight themed experience zones spread across campus, each focusing on different areas of engagement.

"They include robotics and AI demonstrations, drone races and flight simulators, esports and sports activities, VR tours of U.S. universities, entrepreneurship and CV clinics, podcasting sessions, creative art spaces, and food experiences inspired by American culture," the statement added.

Throughout the day, students are expected to take part in live challenges, performances, and competitions, with prizes including tech gadgets, staycations, and creative support packages.

The activities are designed to expose participants to emerging technologies and career pathways while encouraging innovation and collaboration among young people.

The US Embassy said the tour forms part of activities leading up to the 250th anniversary of the United States, which will culminate in Independence Day celebrations on July 4.

Following the launch at JKUAT, the Freedom 250 Tour will move to other universities, including Machakos University, Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, and University of Nairobi, where the final event will be held.

"The tour is part of activities marking the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States and celebrates innovation, creativity, and people-to-people connections between Kenya and the United States," the statement concluded.

Independence Day in the United States is celebrated on July 4 each year to mark the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

It commemorates the country’s independence from British rule.

The day is observed with fireworks, parades, concerts, and national celebrations highlighting American history, freedom, and patriotism.
