Hundreds of parents and guardians have streamed into Utumishi Girls Academy on Thursday to pick up learners following the dormitory fire tragedy that left 16 students dead and several others injured.
School grounds were filled with anxious families as learners carrying bags and personal belongings were escorted out of the institution after authorities suspended normal operations in the wake of the incident.
The fire broke out at around 12.45am in one of the dormitories, according to Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba.
More than 70 students were rushed to various hospitals for treatment, with some later discharged after receiving medical attention.
Government officials, police officers, Kenya Red Cross personnel and counsellors remained at the school to support affected families and coordinate response efforts.
Authorities also established the 1199 hotline to assist parents seeking information on missing learners and counselling services.
The tragedy triggered an outpouring of condolences from leaders across the country, with calls for investigations into the cause of the fire and renewed focus on safety standards in boarding schools.
Investigations into the cause of the blaze were still ongoing by Thursday afternoon.
